This Project will study and determine the best alternative to improve mobility, accessibility, and reliability for the traveling public along segments of I-195 and CR 537. Mitigating problems at the I-195 & CR 537 interchange will help improve mobility along CR 537 and its exit ramps, reduce delays, and enhance safety for all users. Improvements will also support better accessibility from I-195 westbound to key destinations — the Six Flags and Adventure Crossing complex along CR 537 westbound — while also alleviating congestion from I-195 to CR 537 eastbound, ultimately improving traffic flow and travel time reliability in the interchange area.
Project Purpose:
The purpose of this project is to mitigate congestion at I-195 Interchange 16, helping to improve mobility along CR 537 and along the various ramps to reduce delays at the interchange.
Project Delivery Process
NJDOT has implemented a Project Delivery Process that complies with both federal and state regulations. This process encompasses the entire lifecycle of a project, from initiation to construction. Currently, this study is in the Concept Development Phase.
The I-195 & CR 537 Interchange Study was initiated as a result of a NJDOT Problem Statement that identified known issues in the Study Area. Long traffic queues were observed on both CR 537 and the I-195 ramps, in particular during weekday peak periods and during summer months. Traffic congestion was also found to reduce the average travel speeds below the posted speed limit.
Additionally, the interchange does not include a dedicated exit ramp from I-195 westbound to each direction of travel along CR 537. Instead, motorists arriving from I-195 westbound share an exit ramp for both CR 537 westbound and eastbound access, with CR 537 westbound access controlled by a traffic signal and eastbound access by a stop sign. Heavy traffic volumes exiting to CR 537 westbound can back up from the signal to where the shared exit ramp splits. The signalized westbound exit ramp intersection also contributes to congestion along CR 537 and reduces accessibility to and from key destinations — Six Flags, Adventure Crossing complex, and Jackson Premium Outlets.
